Wednesday Night Running Club!

Wednesday Night Running Club is up and operational on the UES! We meet at the store on 85th and Lex a bit before 7 pm on Wednesday nights for our conversationally paced 3-5 mile run in Central Park. Come on by and meet runners from our staff as well as runners in your community. All abilities are welcome; the emphasis is on fun, rather than speed. Runs are led by our staff and will meet rain or shine. Runners can leave their gear at the store, as we will be returning before close so that you can retrieve it.
Come on by and run with us!

The Bunny is Coming!

Construction has begun on our new uptown store! This week, a crew of workers began to make the first changes to the store front that will become JackRabbit Sports on Lexington Ave. The workers began by removing the last vestiges of Ricky's and Hippototamus, with crowbars and hammers. Out with the lime green walls and orange hippos and in with the bunny! Here are some pics of the initial demolition.

JackRabbit's New Warehouse!

While it may not be the most glamorous location, our new warehouse is a key part of our operation. Recently, we moved all of our back stock out to this new building, so that we can free up space in the Union Square and Brooklyn locations. A team of dedicated staffers packed up all of the gear and brought it out to Jersey. Check out the pics from moving day!

Kicking off Super Sunday with an Indoor Tri

Super Sunday had a whole new meaning for the 33 athletes who competed at the JackRabbit Indoor Tri on February 1st. Racers traveled to the JCC on the Upper West Side for the early morning competition. On the womens' side, Megan Clarke swam an impressive 27 laps, to oulast second place finisher Rina Robinson. Stephanie Chamberlain rounded out the top three, with an impressive 16 mile performance on the bike.

The race was equally close on the mens' side. Bouker Pool outpaced JackRabbit's own Terry Moore, by just two laps in the pool and .65 miles on the bike, to claim the top spot on the podium. Marc Perez clocked the best bike split of the race, with 20.26 miles, to finish in third place.

The series race will be held on February 22 at the Prospect Park YMCA, in Park Slope Brooklyn. This will be the final qualifying race before the series championships at Asphalt Green on March 15th.

New Store to Open on the UES

JackRabbit is movin' on up to the East Side! While it will not be a deluxe apartment in the sky, it will be a great new store on 85th and Lexington. We are set to open this March, and we will be tracking the new store's progress on this blog. Since I will be the manager at our new digs, I would like to track its evolution. So, here are some photos of the location as it exists now.

<---This is the main entrance. In a past life, this location was a Ricky's. There are still some traces of glitter and makeup on the door.

This lovely, lime green wall will eventually be the cash wrap. -->

<--This is the sales floor, as seen from what will become the shoe department. Could we get any more mirrors? Jeez....

It is a little hard to picture what the store will look like. I did my first walk through of the space today, and it was a little scary. Not only was there glitter and makeup on the door, there was hot pink cobwebbing all over the ceiling. The AC system is hanging out of the wall. There is a truly frightening bathroom situation going on; the likes of which have not been seen since the first Evil Dead film. Speaking of creepy, there were also random bits of the previous store lying
around.

I guess that no one will be able to return those costumes after all. -->

<-- Hopefully, we will be able to put in a water cooler at this location. Somehow I just don't think that this water fountain will work. I am pretty sure that it was installed sometime during the Eisenhower administration.

This view is from the back of the store looking towards the main entrance. Over here will be apparel and the area at right will be the shoe floor. Stay tuned for updates......

Indoor Tri Series Rolls into Asphalt Green

Winter's Chill is No Match For Determined Triathletes

The temperature outside may be cold, but the competition at our Indoor Tri series just keeps heating up! The most recent edition of popular race rolled into Asphalt Green on January 11, 2009. 37 athletes swam, spun and sweat their way through the afternoon. Racers dove in for ten minutes of intense swimming in A.G.’s famous pool. Then, it was out of T1 and into the spin room for a fast and furious thirty minutes. Finally it was out of T2, and downstairs to the treadmills for a speedy twenty minutes. Competitors wrapped up their afternoon with some cool drinks and plenty of post race discussion in the AG CafĂ©.

On the men’s side, the competition was fierce. The top spots were separated by only a handful of points. Alex McCrery swam 30 laps, cycled 18.58 miles and ran 2.75 miles to edge out William Capune for first place. Capune’s second place time featured the best run split of the competition: a blazing 3.17 miles. Holter Graham rounded out the top three, with his second podium finish of this season.

For the women, the race was just as exciting. Barbara Rich, coming off a third place finish on December 12th , raced her way to first place. She swam 27 laps, cycled 18.62 miles and ran 2.29 miles. Second place winner Pei-lei Guan posted and impressive bike split, with 19.27 miles. Julie Post, in her first indoor triathlon of the season, finished strong in the third podium spot.

The next edition of the race will be on February 1st at the JCC on the Upper West Side. For more information on the race, click here. If you would like to register, click here.
